The Essential Planning – Part 4

Watching my father, Dr. David Teis, plan the church calendar every year while growing up was the inspiration I needed to become a planner.  His dedication to his church continues to this day with 35 years of ministry and 850 members.  I have also learned planning skills from reading a multitude of books on the subject, but the idea for Vision Sunday came from a pastor-friend in California named Paul Chappell.  For the last 25 years, he has used vision night to keep his congregation on track as he lays out the plans for the coming year.  This is the fourth step in my annual planning process… so… here we go…

Crews were awaiting the arrival

Image credit His motions plainly denoted his extreme exhaustion. In most land animals there are certain valves or flood-gates in many of their veins, whereby when wounded, the blood is in some degree at least instantly shut off in certain directions. Not so with the whale; one of whose peculiarities it is to have an entire non-valvular structure of the blood-vessels, so that when pierced even by so small a point as a harpoon, a deadly drain is at once begun upon his whole arterial system; and when this is heightened by the extraordinary pressure of water at a great distance below the surface, his life may be said to pour from him in incessant streams. Yet so vast is the quantity of blood in him, and so distant and numerous its interior fountains, that he will keep thus bleeding and bleeding for a considerable period; even as in a drought a river will flow, whose source is in the well-springs of far-off and undiscernible hills. Even now, when the boats pulled upon this whale, and perilously drew over his swaying flukes, and the lances were darted into him, they were followed by steady jets from the new made wound, which kept continually playing, while the natural spout-hole in his head was only at intervals, however rapid, sending its affrighted moisture into the air. From this last vent no blood yet came, because no vital part of him had thus far been struck. His life, as they significantly call it, was untouched. The Essential Planning – Part 1

I’ve got to be real with you!  Among my favorite things in life, I would include sitting in front of the television with a bucket of popcorn in my lap while watching a shootout between the bad guys and the good guys.  I love to chill, relax, and think about nothing!  So, left completely to myself, I would never get anything done unless I planned to get it done.  Therefore, I plan. Over the years, I have developed a 4-step planning process that has helped me tremendously in planning for the coming year and staying on schedule throughout the year.

So I thought, over the next few blog posts, I would share with you my process for annual planning.  (My 4 steps: Personal Planning in August, Staff Planning in September, Men’s Leadership Planning in November, Vision Sunday on 1st Sunday of January)

Freed from its enemy, stopped short

The field mouse, now that it was freed from its enemy, stopped short; and coming slowly up to the Woodman it said, in a squeaky little voice: “Oh, thank you! Thank you ever so much for saving my life.” “Don’t speak of it, I beg of you,” replied the Woodman. “I have no heart, you know, so I am careful to help all those who may need a friend, even if it happens to be only a mouse.” “Only a mouse!” cried the little animal, indignantly. “Why, I am a Queen–the Queen of all the Field Mice!” Continue reading “Freed from its enemy, stopped short”

Date Your Mate – Part 5

In previous posts we defined the date, balanced the budget, bagged the babysitter and customized the categories. Today we will see essential elements to any date. All dates are not the same but all good dates will include certain elements!

1.  Romance

Ahhhh, candle light… freshly cut roses… and Lionel Richie playing in the background.  OK, maybe Lionel Richie is not your thing, but nonetheless, romance is an essential element in Dating.  From our earliest days we are conditioned to desire romantic love, just re-watch any Disney movie and you’ll see.  Yet it’s not just the ladies.  I cannot tell you how many times I have had men complain to me during marriage counseling that their was “cold” romantically.  Go to a nice restaurant and spend time looking into each other’s eyes.  Complement your love on their clothing, smile or general appearance.  You may think that this is a bit silly and unnecessary but I challenge you to read the Song of Solomon in the Bible and see how many specific compliments were given from man to wife and from wife to man. romance, setting the mood is important.
