Other poets have warbled the praises of the soft eye of the antelope

Still, we can hypothesize, even if we cannot prove and establish. My hypothesis is this: that the spout is nothing but mist. And besides other reasons, to this conclusion I am impelled, by considerations touching the great inherent dignity and sublimity of the Sperm Whale; I account him no common, shallow being, inasmuch as it is an undisputed fact that he is never found on soundings, or near shores; all other whales sometimes are. He is both ponderous and profound. And I am convinced that from the heads of all ponderous profound beings, such as Plato, Pyrrho, the Devil, Jupiter, Dante, and so on, there always goes up a certain semi-visible steam, while in the act of thinking deep thoughts. While composing a little treatise on Eternity, I had the curiosity to place a mirror before me; and ere long saw reflected there, a curious involved worming and undulation in the atmosphere over my head. The invariable moisture of my hair, while plunged in deep thought, after six cups of hot tea in my thin shingled attic, of an August noon; this seems an additional argument for the above supposition. 8 Tips for Teenagers

1 – Go to Youth Group – Hebrews 10:24-25

One of the greatest opportunities that are afforded to you right now is a church youth group.  I have been involved in several over the past few years.  While I was a teenager I was in Liberty Baptist Church’s youth group, while in college I ministered for 3 years in the Campus Church Youth Group and now we have a youth group in the church that I pastor at Southern Hills. shbaptist.com/teens What is amazing about youth group is that you have a youth pastor who loves you and prays for you.  There are amazing actives like Winter Retreat, Summer Camp and Youth Conference.  There is a spirit of love that encourages you to live right in a world that is encouraging you to live for yourself.

The Missing Heroes

Understanding the Background of the New Testament – Part 1

When the Old Testament narrative ends the northern tribes (Israel) have been decimated by the Assyrian Captivity and the southern tribes (Judah) have fallen to the Babylonian Empire.  The books of Ezra and Nehemiah tell us the story of the journey home from Babylon and the rebuilding of Jerusalem and her beloved temple.

5 Tips for Mommy-less Days

Single Moms and Single Dads are my new Heroes! Really!!! I look around our congregation and I see these dear women and men who are doing it all by themselves!  They get the kids out the door to school, go to work everyday, many times to an underpaid & unappreciated position, pick up the kids from school, do the homework and then put them down for the night… ALONE!  Phew!  I’m tired just thinking about it.  For those of you who are single parents I have no suggestions (other than keep walking with Jesus) only admiration.

5 Steps to Finding Great Books

Reading is not lame!  I can remember as a child getting a hold of my very first copy of “Pilgrim’s Progress”.  Mrs. Kerber was my Sunday school teacher and I was was only 9 years old when our class had a contest that ended in me winning 2nd place and the a fore mentioned christian classic.  The book was obviously published by someone trying to market to my age group.  Christian was on the cover with a shiny sword, a suit of armor, and a look of determination on his face that clearly stated his strength in the face of peril.  That book changed the direction of my life in 2 BIG ways.  First, I began to look at the christian life as a journey and an adventure. Secondly, I fell in love with books.

The Temptation to Preach Religion

I never get over how strong the temptation is to preach religion instead of preaching that which I am commissioned to preach, Christ!

I Corinthians 1:23, II Corinthians 4:5, Colossians 1:28

Currently I am preaching through a sermon series called Heroes: 8 Stories of Incredible People.  The second sermon was slated as a charter study of the life of Peter.  When I study the life of Peter I see an incredible walking contradiction, a man of incredible strength and epic weakness.  At one moment he is walking on water and the next he’s slipping into the waves.  It seems no apostle is more commended and subsequently corrected than Peter, many times all within the same passage.
