Who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power everlasting. 1 Timothy 6:15-16
What is it that comes to your mind when you think about God? A.W. Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
Paul was writing the final words of this letter to young Timothy when thoughts of his heavenly Father broke out into an expression of deep, genuine worship of God. Worship is the chief activity of every child of God. The fascinating element about worship is that it is directly related to our present thoughts about God. For instance, thoughts that are bitter, angry, and doubtful toward God are not going to produce worship; however, thoughts that are humble, grateful, and patient toward God will always fuel a heart of devoted worship.
These verses remind us how important it is to fix our thoughts on The Infinite God. What does it mean that God is infinite? In its purest definition, it means that God is “without limits.” Paul uses three concepts to define the infinite character of God: (1) Sovereignty – Who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords. The term Potentate describes Him as the Sovereign Ruler. God is indeed the all-powerful one. (2) Immortality – Who only hath immortality. God cannot be touched by death. His
eternality is without space or time. He is above history and beyond time. Out of His life comes all other life. (3) Holiness – dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto. He is totally separate from sin, absolutely perfect, and entirely pure. His holiness is so transcendent that there’s only one way to even approach Him – through the holiness of His Son, Jesus.
It’s with these thoughts of the infinite God that Paul cannot help but to worship Him – to whom be honor and power everlasting. Remember, our thoughts of God are what produces our worship of God. Focus today on the infinite God and His all-knowing, all-powerful plan for your life. He loves you, and His infinite glory longs to be with you today. Amazing!
