Developing a Great Team – Part 4

At Southern Hills, church would no longer be church without our invaluable Support Staff.

Music Ministry

We no have dozens of people led by Pastor Jason in our Choir and Praise Team who lead our church in worship every week.  These folks sacrificially arrive early and stay for each of our services to use their gifts for the ministry of worship.  They not only perform for those who come but lead each of us to the throne of God to offer our sacrifice of praise. In our larger auditorium this would not be possible without our faithful sound technicians who do a fantastic job making sure things run smoothly throughout the service.

Nursery Workers

Wow!  Could you imagine coming to church and hearing 12 infants crying and watching 12 toddlers toddling in the midst of the worship service?  I love babies, we had 3 of them, but no one would ever be able to pay attention.  Yet amazingly, week after week, new mothers and fathers are able to sit in church unencumbered by their little bundle and fully able to hear the gospel of Christ because of the faithfulness of the ladies of the nursery!  I believe that dirty diapers, baby bottles, and crowns in heaven have much in common.

Ushers & Parking Ministry

These positions have become even more important since our space has become so very limited!  I have noticed how our ushers have really stepped it up over the past few months!  They are on the ball finding people seats and making people feel comfortable and at ease in the auditorium.  They take their handling of the offerings very seriously, as I have noticed, under the leadership of Ken Savage, Jarrod Patton & Jim Powell.  Our parking lot has become virtually nonexistent as people are parking up and down the surrounding streets and into the desert lots across the way.  Mike McConnell has led an elite group of men who have tackled this challenge with strength, determination and friendliness.

Hospitality Ministry

We have been called a very friendly church!  Truly, if you walk into one of our sunday morning services there will be several greeters at the door who will hand you a church program and reach out to shake your hand with a smile.  Upon entering the lobby you will notice a line of church hosts just waiting to assist a new family in finding their way around our beautiful facility.  A facility that would only remain beautiful because of the faithfulness of those in the cleaning ministry.

It is true that no man is an island and when we think of the great church that is Southern Hills, let us remember those who make this church truly great: pastor’s staff, the deacons, the lay-leadership, and the support-staff.  Without this Team – I would never be able to do what God has called me to do!

What ministry positions did I forget?  What ministries do you have in your church that we don’t have at SHBC?  What is your favorite thing about serving in one of these ministries?  Comment Below:

It is a very friendly church. Also, without the parking ushers, Gary would be at a distinct disadvantage. We really appreciate that. Are there plans to do a photographic church directory so we can memorize some of the names to all these friendly faces????

I sure am glad that the Parking Lot Ministry has been a blessing to you and your husband. They are extremely friendly and I love looking forward to seeing them waving and smiling as I arrive at church every sunday morning.

The idea of a pictoral church directory is great. In fact we did one of these a few years ago. Now is probably not the right time since our church is in the midst of a major growth phase that doesn’t seem to be slowing, we would probably be missing 20% of our members by the time the book was actually published.

I think the best way to get to know other folks is through our small groups that meet on wednesday nights. I’d encourage y’all to consider one of those or the ladies Bible study on thursday mornings or the women’s group that meets weekly at Sandy Stevens house. All are great!

Talk about the parking lot. Last Sunday church called the crossings on buffalo , wanted to see if they had a lot ministry, yes they do. But I only saw 2 maybe a third guy somewhere, the place was packed on mothers day. I thought it was funny to see them wearing shorts and flip flops. To each his own I guess. I do appreciate the guys who do the parking lot, we have a good time when doing it and gives us a chance to fellowship and have a few good laughs…

Thankful for your ministry in the parking lot Ken! You guys do a great job. I know the Crossings Church, great folks, love them! The only reason we have our guys in the Southern Hills shirts and reflective vests, holding parking wands is to give our visitors an obvious person to look to in case someone doesn’t know where to go. Our parking is extremely limited and our guys have to be sharp as tacks to assist the many visiting people.

Yes Linette, there is no church like ours! I love being here at SHBC and I have certainly received much more from serving than I have ever given!

You bring up an interesting point Dawn. It is true that we seem to receive much more from God when we are serving than we are ever able to give. It reminds me of our Lord’s word:

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

We have a group of women in our church that are the meal makers… when someone has a baby or a family is gOing through hard times… their ministry is make meals And often house visits. I know it has been a huge blessing to our family over the past 5 years. But its there a certain point that a church gets too big for that? Would that fall under your hospitality ministry?

That’s a great ministry. Yes, for us we have a group of ladies led by one of our deacon’s wives named Kate Snook. She is amazing at helping in this way.

I love serving and learning from those that I serve with at Southern Hills. It also helps me meet some that I wouldn’t normally see. I think that you can see the love pouring out in those that serve. Even ass regular members it is great to see the group of smiling friendly faces waiting to greet you at the doors.
